Not a Very Happy New Year for Oakland

“To say I’m pissed off is an understatement.”---Head Coach Hue Jackson

By Barbara Mason
Raiderdrive.com/Bay Area Sports Drive

Sunday afternoon the Oakland Raiders took on the San Diego Chargers in their final game of the regular season, a must win for the Silver and Black.   The Raiders also needed a little help from their friends most notably the game between the Denver Broncos and the Kansas City Chiefs.  A Chief win coupled with an Oakland win would give the Raiders a ticket to the playoffs.  The stage was set for a nerve rattling finish to the 2011-2012 season.  Simple one might say but remember we are talking the Oakland Raiders.  This season they have squandered a number of golden opportunities.  Had the Silver and Black taken advantage of just one of these opportunities we would not be talking about “hoping to get into the playoffs.”-Story >>>>

The Chicago Bears came into Oakland riding on a five game winning streak.  Unfortunately for Chicago, their starting quarterback Jay Cutler was not on the field after having thumb surgery this past week that put him most likely out of the rest of the regular season.  Second string quarterback Caleb Hanie would step into his shoes having minimal experience during his four years in the NFL...Story >>>>

Penalties and Interceptions Beat Oakland

“Right now we are a very inconsistent team,””--Head Coach Hue Jackson

By Barbara Mason 11/06/11
Raiderdrive.com/Bay Area Sports Drive

Sunday’s game pitting the Oakland Raiders against the Denver Broncos will be a very real indication of just what the Silver and Black can expect as this season reaches the mid-way point of the 2011 season.  The spotlight will be focused on the first start of quarterback Carson Palmer in his first start as an Oakland Raider.  Last week’s bye could not have come at a more opportune time giving not only Palmer but the entire team a chance to re-group after an ugly showing against the Kansas City Chiefs two weeks ago.

With a Kansas City loss earlier in the day and the Chargers losing to the undefeated Packers, the door was open for the Raiders to maintain their position atop the AFC West. Story >>>

Raiders Crushed By Kansas City

The Kansas City Chiefs took an early 7-0 lead over the Oakland Raiders when a Kyle Boller pass was intercepted by Kendrick Lewis for a 59 yard romp into the end zone.  Neither team was able to get their running game going as they both traded possessions several times in that first quarter.  Mid-way through the opening quarter Boller had been picked off twice.  Both of those picks resulted in Kansas City scores.  With two minutes left in the quarter the Chiefs led by a score of 14-0.    It was a lackluster performance that was spurred by the absence of Darren McFadden who left the game early with an apparent ankle sprain. Coach, owner, renegade, rebel, scout, Hall of Famer, commissioner, general manager; how many hats can one man wear?  Which of these titles were the most important to him?  With the passing of Al Davis at the age of 82, we may never know.  We do know that he gave every day of his life, all he had to give to the sport that he so dearly loved.  He was one of the most important figures in the history of the National Football League.  His contributions to the world of football are simply amazing when you sit down and really think about it....STORY>>

PALMER-CHILI PALMER-Show me the Money
Ask the Fans in Silver & Black

Interviews-By Barbara Mason & Larry Garcia
Bay Area Sports Drive-Raiderdrive 10/25/11

Raiderdrive-BayAreaSportsDrive had the opportunity to ask the fans in Silver & Black what their thoughts were of new QB Palmer. Will he be the leader in the Silver & Black? Giving up a first and second for year one and two? Could Palmer be the Factor that the Raiders need? Would Mr. AL Davis have approved? As the movie with John Travolta Chili Palmer—Cool-calm and collective took care of business in the line of fire if the money was right. But in the end, Chili Palmer did what he felt was right in his heart and walked off into the sunset as a winner. Story-Fans-Photos>>>

Enhanced Security Improves Game Day Experience

“There are two events on game day.--Jeffrey Miller Head of NFL Security

By Barbara Mason 8/28/11
Raiderdrive.com/Bay Area Sports Drive

The NFL takes game security very seriously and in the aftermath of last week’s events at the Raider 49er game jumped into action immediately putting together a plan that will effectively put a stop to any future altercations.  As Head of NFL Security Jeffrey Miller explained during half-time at the Oakland-Saints game, “there are two events on game day.”  The first of those two events are of course the tailgate parties in the parking lot and the second being the game itself. Raiders Come Up Short in a Winnable Game

The Oakland Raiders put the Miami Dolphins on notice with an opening kickoff return by Jacoby Ford for a 101 yard touchdown.  After a drubbing at the hands of the Pittsburg Steelers last week, this opening drive for Oakland was exactly the way the team wanted to start the game Sunday.  The question would be, could they finish the same way? Oakland Loses A Legend and a Gentleman

By Barbara Mason

The world of the Silver and Black was sent reeling when the news of the passing of former Oakland Raider Jack Tatum broke early this morning.  The 61-year old sucumbed to a massive heart attack leaving his wife Denise, his children, friends and a dedicated nation of grieving fans.

You can’t think of the glory days of Oakland without thinking of safety Jack Tatum. He was known for his punishing hits, his aggressiveness and intimidating style of play.  “If a receiver caught a ball, I felt that I was doing something wrong,” he said.   This first round draft pick out of Ohio State played in 3 Pro Bowls and played in the Super Bowl in the 1976 season.

His aggressive nature was left on the field as he was a quiet, reserved and generally nice guy off the field.  Anyone who knew him respected this down to earth, generous and soft-spoken gentleman.   After retiring from the game, he settled down with wife Denise spending precious time with his children.

Jack Tatum gave us memories that will never be forgotten.  While he may have been misunderstood by some, those people he loved most, the Raider Nation, loved him right back.  They supported him throughout his career and when he retired that support continued.  Jack Tatum will forever be in our hearts.  Our sincere condolences go to Denise his wife, his children and the Raider Organization.

The man, the legend, the "Assassin"
